Center Stage Theatre Announces Auditions for MISERY

Community actors invited to take on three demanding roles in the stage thriller based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel

A famous novelist wakes after a car crash in the home of his self-proclaimed biggest fan. What begins as a rescue quickly tightens into captivity, setting the stage for one of Stephen King’s most recognizable thrillers. This fall, Center Stage Theatre at Midland Center for the Arts is looking for three actors ready to bring that tension to life in Misery, adapted for the stage by William Goldman.

Auditions are open to actors ages 18 and older and will take place Monday, Oct. 26 from 6–9 p.m. at Midland Center for the Arts, with callbacks Wednesday, Oct. 28 from 6–9 p.m. by invitation. Virtual auditions will also be accepted Oct. 18–25. The production is directed by Adam Gardner-Northrop, with Assistant Director Brooke Gomez and Stage Manager Katie Short.

At the center of Misery are two formidable roles: Paul Sheldon, a successful novelist left injured and dependent after a serious car crash, and Annie Wilkes, the devoted reader who rescues him before revealing just how far her admiration can go. The cast also includes Buster, a nearby sheriff whose search for Paul brings him increasingly close to the truth. Each role calls for an actor ready to explore the story’s shifting power, physicality and mounting suspense.

“More than just a thriller, it explores isolation, determination and the fine line between admiration and obsession,” Gardner-Northrop said. “Every scene is packed with tension, making it an exciting challenge for actors and a rewarding experience for everyone involved in the production.”

Misery will play Jan. 22–31, 2027 at Midland Center for the Arts. Actors do not need to match the listed character ages exactly and performers of all races, ethnicities, gender identities, gender expressions, disabilities, sexual orientations and backgrounds are encouraged to audition.
